Ten years' worth of holiday mashups

animation

DJ BC wrote us with the news that he's not doing another Santastic Christmas mashup album this year, but: "While we have no NEW collection this year- we do have ten years of holiday mashups and remixes here for your enjoyment and free downloading. This should be more hours of fractured Xmash than any sane person can stand, from bootleggers worldwide." Read the rest

Christmas mashups: Santastic 8

dj BC writes, "I just dropped Santastic 8, the 8th annual Holiday mashup album in the series (10th if you count 'Menorah Mashups' and 'Re:Compostition'). This year we offer 14 new Christmas mashups, and one old one which was reissued because it is great and it matches the album cover so well. Contributors come from California, Atlanta, New York, Boston, Vienna, The Netherlands, Stockholm and Nashville."

There's some outstanding work here -- don't miss mojochronic's Lou Reed tribute at Track 12: "Lou Christmas (Without You)." Read the rest

One year ago today Santastic 7: more mashups for the holiday season: djBC and friends have put out their seventh Santastic collection of holiday mashups, "It's a Wonderful Mash."

Five years ago today Canned Libraries: the 1936 version of "universal access to all human knowledge": In this 1936 Modern Mechanix article, a fantasy about shrinking the Library of Congress to fit "in a few small filing cabinets" on microfiche/film. Once this is done, copies of the great library will be distributed to worthy institutions all over the world.

Santastic 7: more mashups for the holiday season

djBC and friends have put out their seventh Santastic collection of holiday mashups, "It's a Wonderful Mash." Wonderful it is, too. I recommend starting with track 14, I Wanna Be Dentated - Blitzen's Bop (The Ramones vs The Three Stooges vs The Ray Conniff Singers) or track 6, Riders On The Sugar Plum (Sugar Plum Fairy vs The Doors vs Maroon 5). But it's all fab, and free. Here's djBC's writeup:

The 2012 edition of our annual free mashup collection is now available for free download. Artists sampled include Major Lazer, Soma, Jars of Clay, The Judds, Alex Clare, Queen and David Bowie, Smokey Robinson, Elmo, Lucy Van Pelt, LL Cool J, The Tuborg Julebryg Jingle, The Moonglows, Elvis, Daft Punk, Eddie Dunstedter, ATOM, Tchaikovsky, The Doors, Maroon 5, Johnny Mathis, AC/DC, Ciara, Sublime, Diana Ross, Muse, Bruce Haack, Deadmau5, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Sean Kingston, Diplo & Nicky Da B, Mojo Nixon, The Showboys, Britney Spears, Jose Feliciano,The Ramones, The Three Stooges, The Ray Conniff Singers, Nirvana, Night Ranger, and The Temptations. We wish you Happy Holidays, and hope you enjoy the collection!

Santastic Six: killer mashups for the holidays

djBC has released the sixth Santastic collection, a set of holiday mashups from some of the greatest sonic plunderers in the world (earlier efforts). As always, the Santastic mixes are fantastic. If you want my favorites, try Divide and Kreate's Santatage (MP3) (mashing Otis Redding vs The Beastie Boys vs Run DMC); ATOM's Wonderland Walker (MP3) (mashing Peggy Lee vs Fats Domino vs Bjork); and djBC's Mashing Christmas (MP3) (mashing Danny Elfman vs The Supremes vs Jimmy Stewart).

dj BC mashes up Jay-Z and Brian Eno: ANOTHER JAY ON EARTH

rageear writes, "dj BC returns with his latest mashup album that crosses the works of Jay-Z with Brian Eno. Known for his previous works 'The Beastles', 'Wu Orleans', and 'Glassbreaks', dj BC continues to make fantastically interesting music and shows no signs of stopping."

I just downloaded this and gave it a spin, and as with all dj BC projects, the amazing thing isn't the incongruity of the two sources he combines, but how he finds their underlying similarities and brings them to the fore. I love dj BC's work, and a new album is always cause for celebration.

Santastic 5: more holiday mashups

Mashup impressario dj BC and friends have just released the fifth installment in their much-anticipated annual Santastic series of totally illegal, totally wonderful, totally unauthorized Christmas mashups -- this year with videos. They're all groovy, of course, but if I were you, I'd start with the last track, mojochronic's Motown Christmas.

Romantic V-day song

djBC sez, "For Valentine's Day. Ska/Punk brats Big D and The Kids Table grow up and invent 'Stroll Music,' a fusion of classic R&B, ska, reggae, jazz, and rock. This tune reminds me of the best things about 'Exile On Main Street' - it's a paean to the healing power of travel, adventure and instant relocation. The video was made on a shoestring budget (the flashing lights outside were controlled by kids flicking light switches in time with the music), but they was somehow able to wrangle an airplane, and much of it was shot in the same building as Saw 2 (!). Favorite quote: 'You're much happier when you sing / about how much you dig everything.'"

Hardcore hip-hop Xmas

djBC writes, "As you probably know from the steady stream of Holiday mashup albums I've been compiling over the past 5 years, I dig Christmas music, and I keep remixing it. In this case I took the Big D and The Kids Table Christmas paean to Red Sox, victory, drinking, heavy Boston accents and holiday merriment in general, cut it into a hip-hop beat and enlisted rapper Black Element to bust rhymes. Anyway- I finally did it! I made a Christmas single! AND video! Woo! I hope people get a kick out of it and it ends up on some holiday mixes right next to 'White Christmas.' Or something. Directed by Craig Shannon of Imagavision Films.

Menorah Mashups: djBC's seasonal copyright infringement with a little Klezmer

djBC writes, "After four years of Christmas collections, and with a 18/mo little girl, I decided it was time to take a stab at a Hanukkah mashup/remix collection. The 8 tunes (8 days, 8 tunes, get it?) have a sort of klezmer/traditional Kewish music meets dub/house/pop/hip-hop sort of feel, and the two bonus tracks are for laughs. One high point is Brasilia's FAROFF with his House of Pain vs Amsterdam Klezmer Band mash, with mp3 and video."

I love the description: "Ingredients: Frank Yankovic and His Yanks, Gwen Stefani, House Of Pain, Frank Zappa, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Pa Brapad, several iterations of The Dreidel Song, several iterations of Hava Nagila, South Park, a dash of Chingy, Adam Sandler, The Star Trek Theme, Van Halen, James Caan, Charlton Heston, Fonzie, Sarah Silverman, Trio, Three Weissmen, Craig and Co, Alan Sherman, Pudie Tadow, and two seconds of Black Eyed Peas."

djBC's Muppet mashups

djBC, consistently my favorite mashup producer/creator (he's the guy behind the Beasties/Beatles remix "The Beastles"), has released an entire album of remixes of Muppet music! He sez, "In honor of my daughter's first birthday- and one month late- I'm rolling out 'Muppet Mashup.' Ten mashups, remixes, and covers of music from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. With the legendary McSleazy (of MTV Mash and GYBO), Dunproofin, ATOM, Martinn, Uncanny Valley and yours truly, dj BC. I'm particularly proud of my 'I'm Happy' track, which is built on Edwinn Starr loops, Muppet Show samples, and a fun, funky playground acapella from some little girls on Sesame Street."

I've just listened to this straight through, with the baby, and we were both captivated. Bravo!

Mashups, remixes, and covers of music from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street.

djBC's album of legit mashups: Strictly Mixed and Mashed

djBC, the mashup artist responsible for the amazing, illegal Beasties/Beatles "Beastles" albums, has produced a great albumof authorized mashups, in collaboration with Big D & the Kids Table, called "Strictly Mixed and Mashed." The best work on the CD sounds like vintage Trojan reggae crossed with -- well, a djBC mix. Link

Santastic II: Xmas mashups from djBC and friends

djBC sez, "A kick-ass group of mixers and mashers from the US, England, France, The Netherlands and Sweden has contributed to the second Santastic collection of 23 bizarre and wicked cool X-mashups and remixes. We've even got 2.5 Chanukah bootlegs this year for the all nice little Jewish kids, plus "liner notes" and sample lists from the producers. If you dig it, we hope folks will make a contribution to help kids in the GIFTS portion of the site. Thanks!"

djBC produced the (sadly, censored) Beastles mashups (Beastie Boys v Beatles) -- I'll listen to anything he's got his hand in.

Mashup Xmas album

Virtuoso mashup king dj BC sez, "This is a Christmas album of mashups and unlicensed remixes of Christmas chestnuts by remix artists from the US and UK. All songs (mp3) and the cover art are downloadable. Contains mixes from Go Home Productions (who has done official remix work for Blondie and Bowie among others), Poj Masta (the young prodigy of the UK scene), dj BC (The Beastles, remix work with Heaven 17), and lots of others. 18 tracks total." I'm listening to this now and actually cried out with delight when I happened on Voicedude's Janis Joplin/Santa Baby mashup, "Santa Benz." Link Mirror (Thanks dj BC and Manuel!) Read the rest
