Mainstream parties shrink in Sweden election

Sweden's electorate fragmented at the ballot box, delivering a less-impressive showing for the far right than anticipated by polls—and a better one for the Left Party. The anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats still made big gains, though, leaving the country's mainstream parties at a weak ebb and raising the possibility of a hung parliament.

Sweden looked set for a period of political confusion after election results on Sunday put a center-right bloc and the governing center-left coalition neck and neck, while a far-right, anti-immigration party came in third — winning a higher percentage of the vote than ever before, but achieving less of a breakthrough than polls had suggested.

With more than 99 percent of ballots counted, the national election commission reported that the governing center-left Social Democrats had 28.4 percent of the vote, making it the largest single vote-getter, but handing the party its worst showing in decades.

The center-right Moderate party was next at 19.8 percent, while the far-right Sweden Democrats were running third, with 17.6 percent, up from 12.9 percent in 2014 but a less successful showing than many Swedes had feared.

This months-old tweet from UK political researcher Rob Ford is doing the rounds:

English-language media had their "far right wins big in Sweden" stories all ready to go, and some are now having trouble backing off that simple narratives now the reality is more complex. Read the rest

Rob Ford's brother is running for Ontario Premier, but Rob Ford's widow is suing him for stealing millions from the family

Movie about crack mayor Rob Ford to star mediocre male reporter instead of brilliant woman one who investigated him

Robyn Doolittle was the reporter who did most of the legwork investigating Toronto's crack-smoking mayor Rob Ford. But in the movie about his downfall, a man – a hotshot cub reporter to be played by Ben Platt – gets to be in her hotseat.

"I'm glad they're rewriting the fact that it was a female reporter who investigated Rob Ford," Doolittle wrote Tuesday. "Why have a woman be a lead character when a man could do it?"

"I have the utmost respect for your accomplishments," Platt responded on Twitter. "I play a totally fictionalized character, an entitled, incapable entry-level reporter (my boss is played by Jennifer Ehle) at a fictional competing newspaper. The film alludes to the successful reporting from the Toronto Star."

It's not just that Hollywood can't read the room. It's a black hole of blind incomprehension and any appearance otherwise is just radiation emitted at its event horizon. Read the rest

Meth-tainted 7UP has killed one person and sickened others in Mexico

If you're in Mexico, just say no to 7UP. In Mexicali, Meth has been found in some bottles of 7UP, which, among other symptoms, can cause vomiting, burning to the abdomen and esophagus, and can make it hard to breathe. The tainted soda has killed one person and made seven others sick.

According to Snopes:

The health department of Baja California also issued a statement noting that the meth was found in 2-liter bottles of 7Up and that all stores in the area had been instructed to remove the product from their shelves.

A spokesman for Dr Pepper Snapple Group, the distributors of 7Up in the United States, said that “None of the 7Up products sold in the U.S. are affected by the issue being reported in Mexico.”

The Canadaland Guide to Canada (Published in America)

Jesse Brown is a pioneering podcaster whose Search Engine produced some of the best commentary on the intersection of the internet, pop culture and politics; when he struck out on his own to create a new podcasting empire, Canadaland (previously), he hit on a winning formula: analysing and critiquing Canadian politics by analysing and critiquing the Canadian press, with wit, irreverence and a sharp nose for bullshit -- all of which combine to excellent effect in the brand new Canadaland Guide to Canada (Published in America), co-written with Vicky Mochama and Nick Zarzycki.

Here's the banned video of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford smoking crack

The publication ban has been lifted on beloved conservative hero and former mayor of Toronto Rob Ford smoking crack and babbling incoherently. He seems familiar with the use of a crack pipe.

From The Toronto Star:

Nothing apart from that illness — not documented substance abuse, or allegations of drunk driving, racism, homophobia or a lack of political control over council — kept Ford from mounting a real challenge to return to the mayor’s chair in 2014.

He was never charged. He never testified. Those on the periphery of the whirling saga, like Lisi, who still declare loyalty to the late Ford, faced criminal charges. Ford’s former staff and friends were interviewed by police and compelled to tell their version of the story under oath.

When news of the video’s existence was first published by the Star and Gawker in May 2013, it soon reached nightly international talk show levels.

It’s a video the late Ford tried to deny was real, facing an onslaught of questions as mayor of Canada’s largest city. At first, Ford said he could not comment on a video “that I have never seen or does not exist.”

Months later, Ford would admit to smoking crack (once, in one of his “drunken stupors”).

Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford dead at 46

Rob Ford, the former Toronto mayor famous for political scandals and drug abuse, is dead at 46. He was suffering from pleomorphic liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

In 2013, the Star revealed that Ford had attended a military ball intoxicated and then that a cellphone video apparently showed him smoking crack. That bombshell triggered months of controversy and worldwide headlines as Ford angrily denied, and then finally admitted, abusing drugs and alcohol. Council stripped him of most of his powers. …

In October 2014, following his re-election as councillor and in between chemotherapy treatments, Ford talked to reporters about his legacy. “People know that I saved a lot of money, and people are going to know that I had a few personal struggles,” he said. “So you can remember it for what you want, but they’re definitely going to remember it.”
