Watch how to make patterns in cross-sectioned clay

Nerikomi is a classical form of pottery where different colored clays are rolled into cylinders, then cross-sectioned to reveal a pattern. So soothing to watch the string cut through!

Faith Rahill has a great step-by-step demonstration here:

Nerikomi (often referred to as “neriage”) is a decorative process established in Japan that involves stacking colored clay and then slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern, which can then be used as an applied decoration. Nerikomi designs provide a wonderful way to work three dimensionally with patterns and images. The results reflect a combination of both careful planning and accidental surprise, plus it’s exciting work for those who love patterns and are drawn to the wet-clay stage of pottery making.

Here are a couple more examples with far less annoying music. The agate pottery revealed after firing the glaze is especially nice:

Make clay robots with your kids

We were stuck inside, on a rainy day, and decided to sculpt some robots! Clay Bots has everything you need, and some great design suggestions!

Use the included brightly colored air-dying clay to build your robot. Wind-up feet serve as the platform you start with, add a little creativity and Robot'll be stumbling along before it has even dried. This is a wonderful activity for kids 5-12 years-old, or thereabouts.

The kit also has some simple sculpting tools, a rolling pin and some landscapes to play with. We found it was enough clay for a lot of robot making. I really enjoyed the progression of complexity in the design suggestions, and felt like I improved a lot.

I'm still a boring clay robot designer. I just wanted to make V.I.N.Cent.

Modeling clay sets my daughter's imagination free

Living in a place where my daughter frequently has to find creative ways to entertain herself provides me with endless entertainment. Luckily, if I keep her well stocked with art supplies, I get a constant flow of awesome, cute constructions, paintings, drawings and sculpture. Modeling clay is always a win!

Hannah made this tiny sculpture of herself, a penguin and she tells me that sheep looking thing is Nemo. I think she went seriously abstract on the dog. Also, please note the tons of pet hair on everything in our home.

I hope my daughter enjoys it as much as I do.
